What to Know
Before You Skate

Ice skating is meant to be fun for everyone, but it does come with risk. Use common sense, show courtesy to fellow skaters, and stay aware of your surroundings. The guidelines below help keep our ice safe and enjoyable for all.

  1. Stay in control at all times and be ready to stop or change direction to avoid other skaters.
  2. Keep moving while on the ice. Don’t stop in high-traffic areas or skate in tight groups that block others.
  3. Skaters ahead of you have the right of way. It’s your responsibility to avoid them. That means no speeding, no weaving, no roughness, and no throwing snowballs or other objects.
  4. Keep the exits clear. Look for oncoming skaters before stepping onto the ice, and don’t sit on the dasher boards.
  5. Skate hands-free. Don’t carry children or other items while skating, and no eating, drinking, or smoking on the ice.
  6. Stay off the ice during resurfacing. Rink equipment can be dangerous.
  7. Skates belong on the ice, not in the stands. And no street shoes on the ice.
  8. Listen to our monitors and report any hazards or concerns to them right away.
  9. Respect the ice and the people on it. No littering, no foul language.

This is a partial list. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Our monitors are here to help, but they cannot guarantee your safety or prevent injury. Failure to follow the Responsibility Code may result in loss of skating privileges.

Skate smart. Skate kind. Have fun out there.

Dress for the cold. The rink is chilly, so wear layers and comfortable athletic clothing. We recommend:

  • Helmet (for all skaters)
  • Gloves
  • Socks that come above the ankle
  • Extra padding for new skaters

Need gear? Stop by our Pro Shop for skates, helmets, and athletic apparel.

New to skating? Young or first-time skaters are encouraged to start with a Learn to Skate session and attend a weekday public skate to build confidence on quieter ice.

We offer both hockey and figure skates for rent. A few things to know:

  • We do not carry half sizes.
  • Hockey skates tend to run slightly larger than your shoe size.
  • Figure skates typically fit true to shoe size.
  • Stickers and skates are required on the ice at all times. No street shoes.
  • Follow the Skate Guard’s directions and skate with the flow of traffic.
  • Stay clear of the center ice (see below).

For everyone’s safety, the following are not permitted on the ice during Public Skate:

  • Cameras, cell phones, and headphones
  • Backpacks, large bags, or purses
  • Cones, buckets, or walkers (they create hazards for other skaters)
  • Hockey sticks or pucks (full hockey gear is fine to wear)
  • Carrying small children

Please do not skate through the center of the rink between the four cones. Center ice is reserved for skaters in private lessons or those at the Basic 4 / Adult 4 through Freeskate 1 level.
